"Citizen Conn," The New Yorker, February 13 & 20, 2012

My first full page for The New Yorker illustrates "Citizen Conn," a new short story by Michael Chabon. I'm a big fan of Chabon's—The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay inspired my senior project at Pratt and a while back I did a few illustrations that ran in "The Escapists," a Dark Horse comic series sequel to Kavalier & Clay. This short story is a return to the world of comic book creators for Chabon.

I had longer for this piece than a typical NYer illustration and much of the time was spent conceptualizing. Here are the thumbnails:

There was some debate among the editors as to whether to go with a literal scene from the story or not. As a result, two of the roughs were asked to be developed into final inks.

The literal direction won out in the end (although I went back to the drawing board one more time!).

"Citizen Conn" appears in this week's issue of The New Yorker.

The Big Apple is a place where people have to pay big bucks to live in not-so-big spaces. But who says bigger is better? It's the little things in life that mean the most, and Small Favors is a group show centered around small, affordable works for people who want to support the arts but don't necessarily have a lot of wall space. Artworks created for this show can be in any medium, but most are no larger than 5 inches by 5 inches--a perfect fit for cozy city spaces.

The show features over sixty artists including my brother Jordan and his wife Morgan.

I was asked to participate in "Dimebag 3," a group show curated by Jordin Isip and Rodger Stevens. More than 200 artists were given a 3" by 3" plastic bag to fill. Here's how I filled mine:

The original Dime Bag shows, numbers 1 and 2, were exhibited at The Front Room gallery in Brooklyn and New Image Art in Los Angeles.

The show opens this month at Giant Robot in New York.

For this assignment, the art director at American Medical News asked for two versions of the final illustration- a horizontal one for their online publication and a vertical one for print.

"Les Éphémères" is one of the plays being performed at this year's Lincoln Center Festival.

From the press release:

Over six hours long, in two parts which may be seen separately or on the same day, Les Éphémères is a departure from [Le Théâtre du Soleil’s] traditional focus on socio-political or historical themes. In the words of the director [Ariane Mnouchkine], it is an “an examination of everyday life through the prism of the family, especially, the mother. Out of the ordinariness emerges an abyss of complexity, suffering, the questions we never asked our parents...the ephemeral character of what we are.”

Max at the New Yorker asked me to draw a few of the famous artists and literary figures whose work will be on display at the Morgan Library. There were quite a few to choose from so I went with ones I thought would be most recognizable- James Joyce, Diane Arbus, Oscar Wilde, Rembrandt van Rijn, and Vincent Van Gogh.

New at the Morgan: Acquisitions Since 2004 opens April 17.

"Van Morrison at the Hollywood Bowl ," The New Yorker, February 9 & 16, 2009

"Astral Weeks Live at the Hollywood Bowl" by Van Morrison was recorded last November. Art director Max Bode asked me to do an illustration for the album's upcoming release. I decided to revisit the feel of my Kimya Dawson piece but with shapes implying the Hollywood Bowl and the color palette from the original album art for "Astral Weeks."

My good friend Morgan Levine will be on the Martha Stewart Show, Wednesday at 11am on NBC. She will be featured in two segments explaining how to fold crepe paper flowers.

Morgan's also set up an online store, Amble through Bramble, where you can buy her paper flowers (dipped in resin) as barrettes or brooches! She also has invited Emily L. Eibel and me to sell prints and original works in her Guest Exhibition section!

Legendary producer Bob Nederlander ordered 100 prints of my Soul of Shaolin illustration! He was also generous enough to invite me to the opening- the first Chinese production ever done on Broadway.
